Advance Combination Electrotherapy
What Is Advance Combination Electrotherapy?
Advance Combination Electrotherapy is a modern treatment method that uses two or more different types of electrical currents or healing waves at the exact same time. Usually, this involves combining Ultrasound Therapy with TENS or IFT (Interferential Therapy).
By using these together, the therapy works on two levels: the Ultrasound reaches deep into the tissues to heal the injury, while the electrical current blocks the pain signals. It is an incredibly efficient way to speed up recovery and get relief in a single session.
How Does It Work?
The therapy uses the "Synergy Effect," meaning the treatments work better together than they would on their own.
-
Dual-Action Healing: The Ultrasound waves use sound vibrations to create "micro-massages" deep in your muscles, which reduces swelling and repairs cells.
-
Pain Blocking: Simultaneously, the electrical current (TENS/IFT) stimulates the nerves to close the "pain gate," stopping the brain from feeling discomfort.
-
Enhanced Penetration: The electrical stimulation helps relax the muscle fibers, which allows the Ultrasound waves to travel even deeper and more effectively into the injured area.
-
Flushing Toxins: This combined action rapidly boosts blood circulation, helping to wash away the chemical waste that builds up around a painful injury.
What Are The Treatment Parameters?
Your therapist will adjust the settings on a high-end electrotherapy machine to match your specific condition:
-
Ultrasound Frequency: Set to either 1 MHz (for deep injuries like hips) or 3 MHz (for surface-level injuries like wrists).
-
Electrical Current Type: The therapist chooses between IFT (for deep, chronic pain) or TENS (for sharp, surface-level pain).
-
Intensity: Both the Ultrasound and the Current are turned up slowly until you feel a firm but comfortable "tingling" and a light warmth.
-
Session Duration: Usually 10–15 minutes per targeted area.
-
Application Method: A special gel is used on a single "combination head" (the wand), which delivers both the sound waves and the electricity at the same time.
What Are The Benefits?
-
Faster Results: Because you are treating pain and the injury at once, you often need fewer sessions.
-
Highly Targeted: It allows the therapist to pinpoint the exact "trigger point" or knot causing the trouble.
-
Breaks Up Scar Tissue: Excellent for loosening old, stiff injuries that haven't responded to other treatments.
-
Instant Relief: Many patients feel a significant drop in pain immediately after the session.
-
Non-Invasive: A completely drug-free way to manage severe inflammation.
Conditions Treated By Combination Therapy
This is a "gold standard" treatment for stubborn or complex musculoskeletal issues:
-
Acute Sports Injuries: Such as fresh muscle tears, ligament sprains, or severe bruising.
-
Trigger Points: Extremely painful "knots" in the neck, shoulders, or back.
-
Chronic Tendonitis: Like Tennis Elbow, Golfer's Elbow, or Achilles pain.
-
Joint Issues: Osteoarthritis of the knee, hip, or shoulder.
-
Bursitis: Painful swelling in the "cushion" sacs of the joints.
-
Post-Surgical Pain: Helping tissues heal after orthopedic operations.
-
Plantar Fasciitis: Stubborn heel and foot pain.
How Does It Feel?
-
During the Session: You will feel the cool gel first, followed by a soothing, buzzy tingling sensation. You might also feel a very mild, relaxing warmth deep inside your muscle.
-
The Sensation: Most patients find it very pleasant. It feels like a "deep internal vibrate" that hits the heart of the pain.
-
Afterward: The area usually feels much "looser," and the sharp edge of the pain is often significantly dulled.
Contraindications (When to Avoid It)
As with all electrical and sound-wave therapies, it should be avoided if you have:
-
A Pacemaker: Or any other electronic implants.
-
Pregnancy: It should not be used over the abdominal or lower back area.
-
Metal Implants: Such as plates or screws directly under the treatment area (the electricity can heat the metal).
-
Active Cancer/Tumors: In the area being treated.
-
Recent Injections: If you have had a steroid injection in that spot within the last 2 weeks.
-
Skin Infections: Or open wounds.
The Advance Plan at Ang Physiotherapy
To ensure long-term recovery, we integrate Advance Combination Electrotherapy with:
-
Robotic Decompression: To create space in the joint while we heal the tissue.
-
Manual Mobilization: To move the joint once the pain has been lowered.
-
K-Taping: To provide support to the area after the session is over.
