Shockwave Therapy

What is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave therapy is a simple, non-surgical treatment that uses gentle sound waves to help your body heal itself. A therapist uses a handheld device and a bit of gel to send these waves into your muscles and joints. This "shocks" the area into starting the natural healing process, which lowers pain and helps you move much better. It is most often used for problems with the "tough" parts of your body, like your tendons and ligaments.

The Main Benefits

This treatment is a favorite because it offers several big wins:

  • No Surgery Needed: It fixes both new and long-term pain without any cuts.

  • No Numbing Required: You don't need anesthesia for the procedure.

  • Pain Relief: It specifically targets and lowers your pain levels.

  • Better Movement: It helps you get back to your daily activities faster.

  • Low Risk: It has very few side effects and is a very affordable option.

How Does It Actually Work?

The machine creates a "focus zone"—a specific spot where the sound waves are strongest. The therapist makes sure this zone hits exactly where you are hurting.

The waves work in two parts: first, a quick physical "push" against the tissue, followed by a second phase that creates tiny bubbles. When these bubbles pop, they create a second wave of healing energy. This process tells your body to grow new blood vessels and create more collagen (the "glue" that holds your tissues together). It basically reboots the healing cycle in areas that have been stuck in pain for a long time.

What Happens During a Session?

  1. Check-up: Your therapist will first make sure this is the right treatment for your specific injury.

  2. The Gel: A cold gel is applied to your skin to help the sound waves travel easily.

  3. The Treatment: The therapy head is placed on the sore spot. The therapist adjusts the power based on what you can comfortably handle.

  4. The Schedule: Usually, you’ll have one session a week for about 3 to 6 weeks. This gives your body time to rest and repair between visits.

Common Problems It Can Fix

Shockwave therapy is a "jack-of-all-trades" for muscle and joint issues, including:

  • Back and Neck Pain: Both new and old aches.

  • Shoulder Issues: Like "Frozen Shoulder" or calcium buildup in the muscles.

  • Elbow Pain: Common for people with "Tennis Elbow" or "Golfer’s Elbow."

  • Wrist and Hand: Problems like Carpal Tunnel.

  • Hips and Knees: Including Runner's Knee, Jumper's Knee, and Arthritis.

  • Leg and Foot Pain: Shin splints, Achilles pain, and "Plantar Fasciitis" (heel spurs).

  • Healing: It can even help with bone fractures and overuse injuries.

Are There Side Effects?

Because the treatment triggers a healing response, it is normal to feel a little tender, sore, or slightly swollen for a few days afterward. This is just a sign that your body is working! Most people can go right back to their normal day immediately after their appointment.

When Should You Skip It?

Even though it is very safe, you should not have shockwave therapy if you have:

  • A pacemaker or other electrical implants.

  • Joint replacements in the area being treated.

  • Pregnancy.

  • Cancer (tumors) or active infections.

  • Open wounds or serious nerve/blood flow disorders.
